Nairobi, Kenya – 10th June 2024 – The Pharmacy and Poisons Board has intensified its crackdown on illegal pharmaceutical activities in the Rift Valley region, resulting in over 30 arrests and the seizure of 120 cartons of assorted pharmaceuticals. More than 100 unlicensed chemists have been shut down as part of the Board’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and efficacy of medical products and health technologies.

The recent operations, conducted between June 3rd and June 7th, 2024, were carried out in collaboration with the National Police Service. These actions come after a comprehensive investigation into illegal practices, including the sale of prescription medications without authorization, fraudulent activities involving government drugs, and unlicensed pharmaceutical distribution channels.

โ€œThe proliferation of illicit pharmaceuticals poses a significant threat to public health and safety,โ€ said Dr. F. M. Siyoi, CEO of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. โ€œWe are dedicated to eliminating these activities and holding accountable those who endanger consumer well-being.โ€

The Board’s operations have dismantled numerous criminal enterprises involved in the illegal pharmaceutical trade, thanks to meticulous surveillance and intelligence gathering. The individuals arrested are facing charges related to the illegal distribution, sale, and possession of pharmaceuticals.

The crackdown also saw significant support and collaboration from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, ensuring that those involved in these unlawful activities are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The closure of over 100 rogue pharmacies is expected to disrupt the illicit supply chain and prevent further harm to the public. The Board assures its commitment to ongoing monitoring and enforcement within the pharmaceutical industry, ensuring that only safe and legitimate medications are available to consumers.

โ€œWe urge consumers to exercise caution when purchasing pharmaceuticals and to obtain medications only from licensed and reputable sources,โ€ added Dr. Siyoi.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board continues to play a crucial role as the National Drug Regulatory Authority, established under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act Cap 244 Laws of Kenya, regulating the practice of pharmacy and ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of medical products and health technologies.
