Nairobi, 26 November 2026 – Kenya is taking bold steps to safeguard the safety and quality of all health products in the country. Speaking during a visit by the Ministry of Health leadership, led by Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Ms. Mary Muthoni, emphasised the urgent need to strengthen regulatory enforcement and fast-track Kenyaโs journey to World Health Organization (WHO) Maturity Level 3.
Ms. Muthoni highlighted the importance of enhanced regulatory vigilance, stressing strict adherence to the law, proactive market surveillance, and firm measures to ensure that only safe, high-quality health products reach Kenyans.
She further underscored compliance with critical standards, including bioequivalence, proper licensing practices, and timely product registration, noting that these safeguards not only protect patients but also support the growth of local pharmaceutical manufacturing and Kenyaโs ambition to become a regional hub for medicines and vaccines.

The Chairman of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), Dr. John Munyu, MBS, has reaffirmed the Boardโs commitment to supporting the Ministry of Healthโs agenda on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and positioning Kenya as a competitive hub for pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing.
Speaking during the visit by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Munyu underscored the Boardโs determination to achieve World Health Organization (WHO) Maturity Level 3 by early next year, highlighting the need to increase staff, tighten points of entry, and strengthen regulatory systems. He emphasised that the Board is committed to building a strong, effective regulatory authority capable of delivering high standards in medicines and vaccine regulation.
โWe are determined and ready to deliver Maturity Level 3 by early next year. PPB will continue to support the Ministryโs agenda, strengthen oversight at points of entry, and ensure Kenya becomes a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing,โ Dr. Munyu stated.
During the same session, PPB CEO Dr. Ahmed Mohamed assured that the Boardโs management is fully aligned with the ministryโs UHC vision.
