Kenya and India Strengthen Collaboration on Regulation of Health Products

Nairobi, 2 April 2026 – The High Commissioner of India to Kenya, Dr Adarsh Swaika, paid a courtesy visit to the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), Dr Ahmed I. Mohamed, to discuss the regulation of Health Products and Technologies (HPTs) in Kenya.

The meeting focused on ongoing regulatory reforms aimed at ensuring that all health products in circulation meet the required standards of quality, safety, and efficacy. Dr Mohamed highlighted the implementation of the mandatory renewal of marketing authorisations, a legal requirement designed to ensure that only compliant products remain on the Kenyan market.

The discussions also explored opportunities to support local pharmaceutical manufacturing. Dr Mohamed reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to providing an enabling regulatory environment through measures such as preferential fees and expedited evaluation timelines of between three and six months for locally manufactured products.

The two leaders further discussed regulatory oversight mechanisms, including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspections of manufacturing facilities, which play a critical role in safeguarding public health and maintaining the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain.
