NAIROBI, 31 August 2026 — African traditional medicines remain an integral part of society and healthcare, but unlocking their full potential requires stronger quality assurance, safety monitoring, scientific evidence, accurate dosing, standardised production and clear labelling.

This was the message from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) as Kenya marked the 2026 African Traditional Medicine Day at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), bringing together Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale and other stakeholders for exhibitions and discussions on the regulation and integration of traditional medicines.

Representing PPB Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ahmed Mohamed, Dr. Edwin Burugu, Head of Herbal and Complementary Medicines, called on traditional medicine practitioners to embrace ethical practices and comply with regulatory requirements to safeguard public health.

Speaking in a panel discussion themed “From Tradition to Evidence, Regulation and Integration – Mandates, Achievements, Challenges and Opportunities,” Dr. Burugu emphasised that effective regulation is essential to ensuring traditional medicines are developed, produced and used in ways that protect consumers.

He noted that regulation should not be viewed as a barrier to traditional medicine practice, but as an important pathway for protecting consumers, supporting practitioners, safeguarding traditional knowledge and strengthening public confidence in African traditional medicines.

PPB also participated in the exhibition, highlighting its regulatory role in promoting the quality, safety and efficacy of traditional medicine products as the country works towards their responsible integration into the healthcare system.
