Nairobi, Kenya – the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health led by the Chair, Hon. (Dr) Robert Pukose conducted a fact-finding mission to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to engage with the leadership and address issues affecting the pharmaceutical sector.
They were welcomed by PPB, Chair Dr. Charles Githinji, Board members, CEO Dr. F.M Siyoi and senior management.ย ย The discussions focused on strengthening PPB’s authority through establishing the Kenya Drug Authority, allocating adequate budget, recruiting staff, improving clinical trials, and resolving legal overlaps.
Dr. Pukose praised PPB’s pharmacovigilance system and its efforts to eliminate unlicensed pharmacies. The PPB Chairman Dr Githinji said the Board aims to reach maturity level 3 and urged the committee to fast-track the establishment of KDA.
The CEO, Dr. Siyoi, highlighted the Boardโs role in promoting local manufacturing, enhancing the regulatory framework, and serving as a Regional Centre of Excellence in Africa for Pharmacovigilance. Additionally, PPB has established and operationalized regional offices and ports of entry.
